No credit card? No admin rights? No problem – you can still run paid social to support your engagement

A few years ago, I was sat at my NHS desk, trying to figure out how to get an important piece of engagement work in front of the right people. I knew paid social was part of the answer and I knew exactly who we needed to reach.

But our finance team wouldn’t let me have a credit card.

I did what any good public servant would do – and consulted Google for an answer.

If you've ever found yourself searching "how do I run paid social without a credit card" or "can someone else manage social media ads for us" - this quick read is for you.

The reach problem nobody talks about

Here at Open Voice Lab, we wax lyrical about the fact that digital is not a channel you simply switch on and off when you need to deliver engagement work. Digital is a place where you should be listening and talking to people – not simply advertising surveys.

This brings us on to an important point of organic versus paid social media.

Organic social media reach has been quietly shrinking for years. The platforms are built around paid content - that's the business model. This means that however good your content is, only a small fraction if your followers will ever see it – unless you really strike gold and go viral.

For engagement and communications teams, this is a real problem. You might be running a consultation, trying to reach a specific community, or promoting work that genuinely matters to people's lives. But if the algorithm decides not to show it, the right people never find out.

There’s lots you can do to make your engagement content more appealing, fun, and worthy of hacking the algorithm. But the best way to guarantee your content reaches specific people – of a particular age group, location or community – is to run an ad.

You don't have to miss out if you don't have a credit card

Paid social isn't just for big marketing budgets or large agency campaigns. Even a small, well-targeted spend can make a significant difference to the reach of an engagement project if you know what you're doing.

And that's exactly where we come in.

At Open Voice Lab, we can take a small pot of money and manage the whole process for you. You don't need to own the channels, hold a credit card, or navigate the back end of an ad platform. We handle that. What we bring is the expertise to combine paid reach with content that actually works - designed to engage, not just appear.

Different platforms, different opportunities

Not every platform is right for every campaign, and part of what we do is help you figure out where your budget will have the most impact. Here's a flavour:

Meta (Facebook & Instagram)

Still the most powerful tool for targeted community reach, particularly for geographic and demographic targeting. If you need to reach people in a specific area or age group, this is usually where we start.

Instagram

Strong for visually-led campaigns and younger audiences. Content needs to feel native to the platform to perform well.

LinkedIn

Useful when your audience is professional: stakeholders, staff, system partners.

TikTok

Growing fast, with strong engagement rates among younger demographics. The content approach is different, but the reach can be significant.

Every platform has its own logic, content formats and targeting options. Knowing which one will fit your engagement, and how to make content that will perform on it, is where our expertise lies.

Let's talk about your next engagement campaign

If you've got engagement work coming up - a consultation, a community campaign, a hard-to-reach demographic - and you're not sure how paid social could support it, get in touch. You don't need to have the answers already. That's what we're here for.
